Modest Mouse, A Modest Few
I didn't get into MM until The Moon & Antartica and even then the infatuation was over before it began really. Can't say why. I moved on to other bands, other styles, I guess. Which explains why my Modest Mouse collection is so...well, modest. Anyway, the two I did purchase happen to be the bands best two albums, if you're asking me. And they're pretty hard to find, too!
Modest Mouse is an American indie rock band formed in 1993 in Issaquah, Washington by singer/lyricist/guitarist Isaac Brock, drummer Jeremiah Green, and bassist Eric Judy. They are based in Portland, Oregon. Since their 1996 debut album, This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, their lineup has centered around Brock, Green and Judy. Guitarist Johnny Marr (formerly of The Smiths) joined the band in May 2006, along with percussionist Joe Plummer (formerly of the Black Heart Procession) and multi-instrumentalist Tom Peloso, to work on the album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. Guitarist Jim Fairchild joined the band in February 2009.
The band has accrued significant mainstream success since being signed to Sony's Epic Records in 2000 and have been one of the leading bands in the popularization of indie rock, beginning with The Moon & Antarctica and Good News for People Who Love Bad News, which have been certified gold and platinum by the RIAA respectively. They have gone on to sell over three million records since. Elements of Modest Mouse's early sound have been likened to or inspired by that of Pixies and numerous other alternative rock and space rock bands. Their name is derived from a passage from the Virginia Woolf story "The Mark on the Wall" which reads, "I wish I could hit upon a pleasant track of thought, a track indirectly reflecting credit upon myself, for those are the pleasantest thoughts, and very frequent even in the minds of modest, mouse-coloured people, who believe genuinely that they dislike to hear their own praises."

Death Cab for You!
Offering up a couple from Death Cab: Something About Airplanes and Transatlanticism. The latter being their finest effort to date, I believe. Both are second issues released by Sonic Boom Records on 180g Audiophile Vinyl. As with most of my listings, these are hard to find limited pressings.
Death Cab for Cutie is an American indie rock band formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997. The band consists of Ben Gibbard (vocals, guitar), Chris Walla (guitar, production), Nick Harmer (bass) and Jason McGerr (drums). Gibbard took the band name from the title of the song written by Neil Innes and Vivian Stanshall and performed by their group, the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, in The Beatles' 1967 film, Magical Mystery Tour.
Gibbard's first album, You Can Play These Songs with Chords, was released as a demo, leading to a record deal with Barsuk Records. It was at this time that Gibbard decided to expand the project into a complete band, and recruited band members to join. The band has released six studio albums, five EPs, and one demo to date. Their most recent album, Narrow Stairs, was released in May 2008.

Kings of Leon, The Good Stuff
So, I was on the bandwagon from the start with these guys. I definitely like the early stuff better than the new Arena Rock style they're outputting now. Either way, their first two studio albums are certainly hard to find, each unique in their own way; Youth and Young Manhood was made in Europe and released in the States as a very limited pressing double 10" import and Aha Shake Heartbreak as a limited run white vinyl pressing made in the good ol' US of A. I've got them both. And I will sell them to you if you're the highest bidder!
Kings of Leon is an American rock band that formed in Franklin, Tennessee, United States in 1999, consisting of brothers Anthony Caleb Followill (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Ivan Nathan Followill (drums, percussion, backing vocals) and Michael Jared Followill (bass, backing vocals), with their cousin Cameron Matthew Followill (lead guitar, backing vocals). Each member of the family group is known by his middle name (second given name) as opposed to his first given name.
The band's early music was an upbeat blend of southern rock and blues influences but the band has gradually expanded their sound to include a variety of genres and a more alternative rock or arena rock sound. Kings of Leon achieved initial success in the United Kingdom with nine Top 40 singles, two BRIT Awards in 2008, and all three of the band's albums at the time peaking in the top five of the UK Albums Chart. Their third album Because of the Times also reached the #1 spot. After the release of Only by the Night in September 2008 they finally achieved chart success in their native United States. The singles "Sex on Fire", "Use Somebody" and "Notion" all peaked at #1 on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks. The album itself was their first ever platinum-selling album in the United States. It was the best selling album of 2008 in Australia, being certified nine-times Platinum.

EELS - Souljacker (2001)
SOLD! $54.00
Auction Link (ends August 30th)
DreamWorks Records: 450 335
Format: 12" LP, 180g Audiophile Vinyl
Includes: Original graphics & lyrics inner sleeve
Cover Condition: VG++, Tiniest of tiny dents in the upper right corner. Rock solid rest-the-way-round! Hardly ever pulled from the shelf and always stored vertically in a protective poly sleeve.
Vinyl Condition: Near Mint! Sounds FANTASTIC! Truly immaculate! Inner sleeve also near mint!
Release Info: In 2001 Souljacker was released, an album with a heavier feel and more rock-oriented sound than Daisies of the Galaxy. John Parish, previously of PJ Harvey's band, co-wrote most of the songs and played guitar on the album and first part of the tour. After Parish became a father, he was replaced with Joe Gore for the American leg of the Bus Driving, Band Rocking Tour. Koool G Murder played bass and keyboards and joined Eels on tour, jokingly introduced by E as "the other guy."
Unlike some of Everett's other albums, most notably Electro-Shock Blues, Souljacker is mostly based on stories of outsiders rather than on Everett's own life. Characters were inspired from various sources, including circus freaks ("Dog Faced Boy") and a recording engineer with an abusive past ("Bus Stop Boxer"). German director Wim Wenders called "Woman Driving, Man Sleeping" his favorite Eels song and he used it in the segment he directed for Ten Minutes Older. Wenders directed the video for "Souljacker part I", which reached #30 in the UK Singles Chart. The second track on the album, "That's Not Really Funny", was used as the theme tune to all three series of the BBC's animated comedy, Monkey Dust.
The strings used in the song "Fresh Feeling" were sampled from another Eels song, "Selective Memory" from Daisies of the Galaxy. "Fresh Feeling" was featured in season 1, episode 8 of the NBC show Chuck.
All songs written by E; additional writers in brackets.
1."Dog Faced Boy" (John Parish) – 3:17
2."That's Not Really Funny" (Parish) – 3:19
3."Fresh Feeling" (Koool G Murder) – 3:37

Vinyl Condition: Near Mint! Played once the day I brought it home. SILENT! Insert also near mint!
Release Info: In 2000, Eels released Daisies of the Galaxy. The album, which was recorded almost entirely in E's basement, is lighter and more upbeat than its predecessor. Everett noted, "if Electro-Shock Blues was the phone call in the middle of the night that the world doesn't want to answer, then Daisies of the Galaxy is the hotel wake-up call that says your lovely breakfast is ready". He was joined in the studio by Michael Simpson (Dust Brothers), Grant-Lee Phillips (Grant Lee Buffalo), and Peter Buck (R.E.M.). On the tracks "It's a Motherfucker" and "Selective Memory", E plays the same piano that Neil Young used on his classic album After the Gold Rush.

The first single, "Mr. E's Beautiful Blues", was co-written by Simpson and features the sound of his pager in the beginning. The song was not intended to be on the album, but the record company insisted on its inclusion. Therefore, it is not featured on the track listing but is instead listed as a "bonus track", separated from the rest of the album by 20 seconds of silence. E declared, "You can think of it as buying the album and getting a bonus track, or buying the single and getting a bonus album." The song also appeared on the Road Trip soundtrack and several of the film's cast members are featured in the music video. Mark Everett was against the inclusion of his song in the film, however it was used when his current publisher overruled his objections. Because of the use of profanity in "It's a Motherfucker" and "Mr. E's Beautiful Blues" ("Goddamn right, it's a beautiful day") a censored version was released. "It's a Motherfucker" was renamed to "It's a Monstertrucker" with E singing over instances of the word fuck in a distorted voice. Dan Bartlett of the presidential campaign for then-Governor George W. Bush cited the album—which was reportedly given as a gift at a Democratic political event—as an example of obscenity-laden entertainment marketed to children. This conclusion was due to the contrast between the aforementioned song title and the cartoon drawings on the album cover, which were inspired by children's books found in the estate of E's mother.
To promote Daisies of the Galaxy another tour took place across the United States and Europe, as well as their first visit to Australia. This time Eels were transformed into an 6-piece orchestra, including Lisa Germano. E also played some solo shows, opening for Fiona Apple.

Release Info: Electro-Shock Blues is the second studio album by the band Eels, released on September 21, 1998 in the United Kingdom and October 20, 1998 in the United States.
Electro-Shock Blues was written largely in response to frontman Mark Oliver Everett's (more commonly known as E) sister's suicide and his mother's terminal lung cancer. Many of the songs deal with their decline, his response to loss, and coming to terms with suddenly becoming the only living member of his family (his father having died of a heart attack in 1982; Everett, then 19 years old, was the first to discover his body).
Though much of the album is, on its surface, bleak, its underlying message is that of coping with some of life's most difficult occurrences. The record begins with "Elizabeth on the Bathroom Floor," a sparse piece composed of one of his deceased sister's final diary entries. Later, the album's emotional climax is reached in two tracks: "Climbing to the Moon", which draws upon E's experiences visiting his sister at a mental-health facility shortly before her death; and "Dead of Winter", a song about his mother's painful radiation treatment and slow succumbing. The album's last song, entitled "P.S. You Rock My World", is a hopeful bookend to "Elizabeth," containing subtly humorous lyrics that describe, among other things, an elderly woman at a gas station honking her car at E, incorrectly assuming he is the attendant, and E's decision that "maybe it's time to live."
According to the Eels official website, the song "Baby Genius" is about E's father, Dr. Hugh Everett III, a quantum physicist who authored the Many Worlds Theory. "Baby Genius" has, as the basis for its melody, the carol "O Sanctissima".
The album was received very well by critics, gaining 4.5 (out of 5) stars from Allmusic. The Los Angeles Times called Electro-Shock Blues "a brilliant work that combines often conflicting emotions so skillfully that you are reminded at times of the childhood innocence of Brian Wilson, the wicked satire of Randy Newman and the soul-baring intensity of John Lennon."
However, fans of the band's heavily promoted hit single ("Novocaine For the Soul") taken from its more pop-friendly first album Beautiful Freak seemed to be put off by Blues's sound and lyrics, sprinkled as they are with phrases such as "radiation sore throat got your tongue" and "they put the flower on the box / that's holding all the sand that was once you", due to which the album sold considerably less than Beautiful Freak.
The record has, though, gained cult status with fans, and is lauded by many to be the best album the Eels have recorded to date. In a 2004 re-review, Dom Passantino of Stylus Magazine included an endnote in which he called Electro-Shock Blues "the greatest album ever put together" and that to disagree or be ignorant of this made the reader an "idiot."
At the time of the album's recording, the only official Eels members were E himself and drummer Butch Norton, as Tommy Walter had left the band. Therefore, the recording features guest appearances by T-Bone Burnett, Lisa Germano, Grant Lee Phillips, and Jon Brion.
In addition to CD and cassette releases, Electro-Shock Blues was also offered on vinyl. This version included two 10" 33 RPM discs on see-through blue vinyl, limited to a small pressing.
"Cancer for the Cure" was also featured in the soundtrack to the 1999 film, American Beauty.

Serving Up Some EELS, They're a delicacy, you know.
POW! This one hurts. My beloved EELS. Well, what can I say? Truly one of my favorite bands over the past 15 years or so. E and the band, they just keep getting better year after year. I will be offering up the first four LPs I purchased, Electro-shock Blues, Daisies of the Galaxy, Souljacker, and Shottenanny! Sadly, I never did get a copy of Beautiful Freak. Even though I was a fan of EELS when it came out, I chose to purchase the CD instead. Urgh!!! And I'm not quite ready to part with my Blinking Lights... box set yet (70/2500 signed by E himself!).
Eels (often typeset as eels or EELS) is an American rock band formed by singer/songwriter Mark Oliver Everett, better known as E. Other members rotate frequently, both in the studio and on stage. Eels appear on several film soundtracks, including American Beauty, Holes, The Anniversary Party, Road Trip, Knocked Up, Yes Man, The End of Violence, Hellboy II, Hot Fuzz, and the first three Shrek movies.

Release Info: Pearl Jam is the eighth studio album by the American alternative rock band Pearl Jam and its debut and only release for J Records (it was also their last album for what was then called Sony BMG, having previously been signed to J's sister label Epic Records for over a decade). Released on May 2, 2006, it was the band's first full-length studio release in almost four years, the longest gap between Pearl Jam's studio albums to date. Following its appearance on the 2004 Vote for Change tour, Pearl Jam commenced work on a new album. The music on the record was proclaimed as a return to the band's roots.
For its eighth album, Pearl Jam again worked with producer Adam Kasper. Pearl Jam was recorded at Studio X in Seattle, Washington. The band began work on the album following the 2004 Vote for Change tour in November 2004. The band worked on the album off and on throughout 2005, with the sessions being interrupted toward the end of the year when the band toured North America and South America. The album was completed in early 2006. Bassist Jeff Ament attributed the length of time recording to lead vocalist Eddie Vedder having a child and the band touring in the middle of recording. The album was mixed by Kasper at Studio X.
Pearl Jam entered the UK charts at number five, the band's highest position there since 2000's Binaural, while it reached number two in the U.S., selling 279,564 copies in its first week. It was held off the top spot by the Tool album, 10,000 Days. As of July 2009, the album has sold 706,000 copies in the United States according to Nielsen SoundScan. Pearl Jam is considered a comeback hit, outselling 2002's Riot Act, though it has fallen short of the sales of the previous six albums, even 2000's Binaural. However, it was also released during a slow year for album sales, and actually charted higher on Billboard's Top Selling Albums of the Year than either Binaural or Riot Act. According to Billboard, it is the 90th best selling album of 2006. Pearl Jam has been certified gold by the RIAA.
The album's cover art, photographed by Brad Klausen, depicts an avocado cut in half with the seed still in place. McCready said, "That symbolizes just kind of...Ed's at the end of the process and said, for all I care right now, we've done such a good job on this record, and we're kind of tired from it. Let's throw an avocado on the cover. I think that's what happened, and our art director goes, hey, that's not a bad idea. I think we were watching the Super Bowl, and we had some guacamole or something." Because the album is self-titled, many fans refer to it as "Avocado" or "The Avocado Album." The inside cover depicts this same seed by itself. The back cover features the same avocado, without the seed. The cover was named in Pitchfork Media's top 25 worst album covers of 2006. Fernando Apodaca handled the liner notes art as well as the music video for "Life Wasted", which emulates the liner notes art from the album. The vinyl pressing of the album is a limited and one pressing issue, just like fellow No Code and Binaural albums.
On the choice of a self-titled album, Vedder explained, "In the end, we thought there was enough there with the title of the songs, so to put another title on the album would have seemed pretentious. So, really, it's actually Nothing by Pearl Jam." During the making of the album Vedder considered the title Superun-owned, a play on Soundgarden's 1994 album, Superunknown. He explained, "We're un-owned. We want to remain un-owned."
Those who pre-ordered the album through Pearl Jam's official website received a version of the album with different CD art and packaging than the retail version. Instead of the retail digipack packaging, this fan club pre-order version resembles a book and has the liner notes bound inside it. In addition, a live CD of the band's show on December 31, 1992 at The Academy Theater in New York City was also included with the pre-order.

Pearl Jam - Rearviewmirror (2004)
SOLD! $154.16
Auction Link (ends August 27th)
Epic Records: E4 93535
Format: 4X12" Trifold LP, Black Vinyl
Includes: Original generic white inner sleeves.
Cover Condition: Near Mint! One minor, minor ding on lower left corner. Barely worth mentioning, just giving full disclosure. No ring wear. Hardly ever pulled from the shelf and always stored vertically in a protective poly sleeve.
Vinyl Condition: Near Mint! Only played a few times, still like new, no surface noise! All four discs are perfect!
Release Info: rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991–2003) is a two-disc compilation album by the American alternative rock band Pearl Jam, released on November 16, 2004 through Epic Records. The album has been certified platinum by the RIAA in the United States, making it the most recent release by the band to attain Platinum status.
The tracks "Once", "Alive," and "Black" have been remixed by Brendan O'Brien. Pearl Jam's version of the Victoria Williams song "Crazy Mary" was supposed to appear on disc two, but was replaced with "Man of the Hour" before release. This release marked the end of Pearl Jam's contractual agreement with Epic Records.
Allmusic staff writer Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave the album four and a half out of five stars. He said that the album "does an expert job not only of capturing the moment when Pearl Jam were monstrously popular, but proving that they still turned out good music even when they were fading from the spotlight. Unlike most career-spanning, multi-disc retrospectives, Rearviewmirror does not emphasize latter-day albums in order to achieve a sense of balance that's inherently phony." Rolling Stone staff writer Christian Hoard gave the album four out of five stars, saying, "Pearl Jam have spent much of this decade courting devotees with a series of live bootlegs, so Rearviewmirror is a welcome concession to casual fans, rounding out the hits with concert staples and non-album cuts. The rockers on the "Up Side" disc sum up the band's continually evolving relationship with effects pedals and emotional catharsis; the slower "Down Side" disc offers gold sounds that are long on big choruses and well-worn sincerity."

Release Info: Lost Dogs is a two-disc compilation album by the American alternative rock band Pearl Jam, released on November 11, 2003 through Epic Records. The album has been certified gold by the RIAA in the United States.
Lost Dogs is a double-disc collection of B-sides and other released and unreleased material. Lost Dogs sold 89,500 copies in its first week of release and debuted at number fifteen on the Billboard 200 chart. Lost Dogs has been certified gold by the RIAA.
A number of songs included on Lost Dogs differ from the originally released versions, including "Alone", "U", "Wash", and "Dirty Frank". The album includes the hidden track "4/20/02" at the end of disc two, a tribute to Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley. It was written by vocalist Eddie Vedder during the recording sessions for Riot Act on the day that he heard the news of Staley's death. The song features only Vedder singing and playing the guitar in a ukulele-inspired tuning. According to Vedder, the reason why it was not included on Riot Act was that the band already had too many songs. According to guitarist Mike McCready, the reason the song was only featured as a hidden track on Lost Dogs is because Vedder "wouldn't want it to be exploitative."
"Angel" (from the 1993 fan club Christmas single) was supposed to appear on disc two, but was deleted before release. There is still mention of it on the "lost dogs" flyers on the back cover. Besides "Angel", some notable omissions from the album include various songs only available on other fan club Christmas singles by the band, "I Got Id" and "Long Road" from the Merkin Ball EP, and "Leatherman" from the "Given to Fly" single.

Release Info: Riot Act is the seventh studio album by the American alternative rock band Pearl Jam, released on November 12, 2002 through Epic Records. Following a full-scale tour in support of its previous album, Binaural (2000), Pearl Jam took a year-long break. The band then reconvened in the beginning of 2002 and commenced work on a new album. The music on the record featured a diverse sound, including songs influenced by folk, art rock, and experimental music.
Producer Adam Kasper was brought in to work with the band on its seventh album. Kasper had previously worked with drummer Matt Cameron on Soundgarden's 1996 album, Down on the Upside. Riot Act was recorded in two sessions in February 2002 and April 2002 at Studio X in Seattle, Washington. The album was mixed by Brendan O'Brien at Studio X.
Riot Act reached number five in the U.S. on the Billboard 200 album chart and number 34 in the UK. The album sold 166,000 copies in its first week of release. The album would end up selling only 508,000 copies in the United States according to Nielsen SoundScan. Riot Act has been certified gold by the RIAA.
The album's cover art, photographed by Ament, features two skeletons wearing crowns, suggesting the possibility that the two represent a king and a queen. The forged metal figurines were created by blacksmith Kenny Gilliam. According to Ament, the band had trouble coming up with a name for the album. After the artwork had been finalized and the tracks were sequenced, the band spent weeks trying to come up with a title. Vedder suggested Riot Act, and the band members went with it as they were tired with trying to come up with a title. McCready stated that the title has no real significance. He said, "I guess we were trying to come up with a title that reflected some of the music on the record, which we thought was urgent-sounding and kind of loud...It just seemed to fit." Ament implied that the title has to do with "getting your act together." The term "riot act" dates back to the Riot Act of 1714 which was introduced by the Parliament of Great Britain giving permission to local authorities to declare any group of more than twelve people to be unlawfully assembled.

No More YouTube :-(
Oh well, seems like the executives in charge didn't like me posting videos of their artists songs. Something about copyright infringement, blah, blah, blah. Leave it to the record label geniuses to discourage promotion and artist visibility. Anyway, it's not worth the hassle. I'll stop before they get all crazy on me. Maybe I'll try again sometime in the near future.

Release Info: Binaural is the sixth studio album by the American alternative rock band Pearl Jam, released on May 16, 2000 through Epic Records. Following a full-scale tour in support of its previous album, Yield (1998), Pearl Jam took a short break before reconvening toward the end of 1999 to commence work on a new album. The music on the record featured an experimental sound, evidenced on songs that utilized binaural recording techniques.
For its sixth album, Pearl Jam brought in producer Tchad Blake, known for his use of binaural recording. Binaural recording techniques were utilized on several tracks, such as the acoustic "Of the Girl." The songs are also identified with an asterisk next to the song names in the lyric book. This was the first Pearl Jam studio album following the departure of drummer Jack Irons, and features drummer Matt Cameron, formerly of Soundgarden, who had previously drummed on Pearl Jam's U.S. Yield Tour. Binaural was recorded in late 1999 and early 2000 in Seattle, Washington at Studio Litho, which is owned by guitarist Stone Gossard.
Similar to the process for Yield, the band members worked on material individually before starting the recording sessions together. Lead vocalist Eddie Vedder called the making of the album "a construction job." Binaural was the first album since the band's debut that was not produced by Brendan O'Brien. Gossard stated that the band "felt like it was time to try something new," and that they "were ready for a change." Regarding Blake, Gossard said, "He was just there for us the whole time, wanting us to create different moods." The album was initially mixed at Sunset Sound Factory in Los Angeles, California with Blake; however, the band proved to be dissatisfied with how the mixes turned out, wanting the songs to sound "heavier." The band then turned to its former producer O'Brien, who was called in to remix several tracks at his mixing facility at Southern Tracks in Atlanta, Georgia. It was with O'Brien that the band determined the final sequencing of the album.
Binaural sold 226,000 copies during its first week of release and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 album chart. It was held off the top spot by the Britney Spears album, Oops!... I Did It Again. Binaural became the first Pearl Jam studio album to fail to reach platinum status. Binaural has been certified gold by the RIAA, and, as of December 2002, has sold 718,000 copies in the United States according to Nielsen SoundScan.
The album's cover art is a Hubble Space Telescope photo of the Hourglass Nebula. Hubble Space Telescope photos of the Helix Nebula and Eagle Nebula are also featured in the inside cover and liner notes for this album, respectively. The photos were used with the permission of NASA. Regarding the artwork, Ament said, "The reason that we went with Tchad [Blake] is because he provides an amazing atmosphere to songs....So, I think we wanted the artwork to represent that....One of the themes that we've been exploring...is just realizing that in the big scheme of things, even the music that we make when we come together, no matter how powerful it is, it's still pretty minuscule. I think for me the whole space theme has a lot to do with scale. You know, you look at some of those pictures, and there are thirteen light years in four inches in that picture."
The album's title is a reference to the binaural recording techniques that were utilized on several tracks. Binaural literally means "having or relating to two ears." Regarding the choice of the title, Gossard said, "When we looked up the word 'binaural,' it meant to listen with both ears. So it seemed like a fitting title for the album."

Release Info: Yield is the fifth studio album by the American alternative rock band Pearl Jam, released on February 3, 1998 through Epic Records. Following a short tour for its previous album, No Code (1996), Pearl Jam went into the studio in 1997 to record its follow-up. The album was proclaimed as a return to the band's early, straightforward rock sound.
For its fifth album, Pearl Jam again worked with producer Brendan O'Brien. Yield was recorded throughout 1997 in Seattle, Washington at Studio X and Studio Litho, the latter of which is owned by guitarist Stone Gossard. The album was then mixed by O'Brien at his mixing facility at Southern Tracks in Atlanta, Georgia.
The album would be the last collaboration with O'Brien for several years. They would not work with the producer again until he was brought onboard in 2008 to remix their debut album Ten and to produce 2009's Backspacer.
The album was proclaimed as a return to the band's early, straightforward rock sound. Yield sold 358,000 copies during its first week of release, and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 album chart. It was held off the top spot by the Titanic soundtrack. Yield became Pearl Jam's first album not to peak at number one on the Billboard charts since Ten in 1991. However, Yield has been certified platinum by the RIAA, and eventually outsold its predecessor No Code, having sold 1.6 million copies in the United States as of March 2007 according to Nielsen SoundScan.
The album's cover art shows an empty road underneath a bright blue sky with a yield sign on the right-hand side of the road. The front cover art image was taken from a photograph of a road outside Billings, Montana. The inside cover depicts the yield sign in the middle of the ocean. The cover of the cassette version has slightly different artwork, moving the yield sign from the right of the road to the left side and reversing the picture of the road. Regarding the liner notes art, there is a yield sign hidden in every picture in the booklet. At the 1999 Grammy Awards, Yield received a nomination for Best Recording Package.
The album title is rooted in the idea of "yielding to nature," a theme central to Daniel Quinn's novel Ishmael. The band members read the book while working on the album. Regarding the title, McCready said, "I think the title Yield has to do with maybe being more comfortable within ourselves, with this band....we're all a little bit older and a little more relaxed and maybe just kind of yielding to those anxieties and not trying to fight it so much...That's what it kind of feels to me – yielding, letting something else happen and going with it." Vedder said, "Let's say that hypothetically speaking, the title does mean something...You can fight so much, and then you have to think, 'What are the real battles?' 'What's really important?' You get to a certain point, and it's really hard to remember what music is and to remember what drives you."
All lyrics written by Eddie Vedder, except where noted.
